• HI, I'M LEONA.

  • THIS IS MY STORY

I am a Silicon Valley native with a “think different” mentality. I started my career as a marketing specialist with a passion for improving healthcare outcomes. I'm now channelling my marketing expertise and background in health technology and policy to catalyze innovative ventures in both the public and private sectors. As a millennial, I don't just embrace innovation — I initiate it.

When I'm not working, you can find me DJing at BFF.fm, geeking out over philosophy, or biking around the city. I also love meeting new people, watching documentaries, and finding random things to collage with.

  • THIS IS WHERE I LEARNED TO THINK

Curiosity killed the Cat, not the Journalist.

    University of California, San Francisco

MS | Health Policy and Law

    San Francisco, CA

Healthcare is in the midst of rapid transformation and in response UCSF in partnership with the UC Hastings College of The Law has launched an innovative new Master's program of which I am a part of its first cohort.

This program interweaves the best elements of health policy and legal education – spanning across economics, finance, policy analysis and legal reform. In preparation to serve as an industry leader, I've gotten the chance to work with researchers and scholars that are just as passionate as I am to solve policy problems and practical dilemmas that our health care system faces each day.

    Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

BS | Science, Technology, & Society, Journalism, Public Relations

    San Luis Obispo, CA

Cal Poly is a distinctive university that fosters a unique "Learn By Doing" approach which encourages students to solve real-world problems by combining classroom theory with experiential laboratory exercise.

As a cutting-edge university, Cal Poly is one of the few institutions that offers an interdisciplinary Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program which has given me a broad understanding of the technical and social dimensions of science and technology.

  • I am a relentless optimist.

I TAKE ON CHALLENGES AND TREAT THEM AS OPPORTUNITIES.

  • THIS IS WHERE I DO WHAT I LOVE

I want to create cutting-edge solutions for the healthcare industry and do work that is worthwhile.

At Elation Health, I’ve played an impactful role in helping independent physicians strengthen the patient-physician relationship by creating resources that can help them save time and spend more time with patients. In particular, I helped launch Elation’s Resource Center, which includes important information on health policies like MACRA and CPC+, as healthcare moves toward value-based care. I’ve also project managed multiple other projects and authored an industry-leading playbook for Direct Care physicians.

While at Bloom, I had the unique opportunity to carve a path for Bloom's marketing efforts. DoctorBase (Acquired by Kareo)

    Marketing Intern | Jul. 2014 - Sept. 2014

    San Francisco, CA

At DoctorBase, I discovered my passion for emerging health technologies and the impacts they can have on people's lives. I was afforded the opportunity to work alongside the CEO and other executives to learn what it takes to market a digital health product first-hand. I also got a chance to learn more about SEO after working to optimize keywords for the Ask DoctorBase feature.

  • The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world,

    ARE THE ONES WHO DO.

  • THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE IN

Social impact starts with the things you care about.

    Health

I became passionate about healthcare after volunteering in the maternity ward at Stanford's Children's Hospital. I've learned more about the inequities that exist in our healthcare system throughout my college career and I'm committed to making healthcare more accessible, affordable, and sustainable.

    Education

I worked to develop a mobile application for high school students, while still in high school myself. I also have teaching experience as a TA. Like the healthcare industry, education is rapidly evolving and I believe that the most innovative teachers and schools will be the most successful ones.

    Science and Technology

As an STS scholar, I'm actively engaged in studying the risk, ethical, and social impact of emerging sciences and technologies. I love to share my passion for STS by hosting informal Science Café hands-on lectures at the Kennedy Library and working as a biomedical ethics TA.

    Philantropy

Early on, I was taught the importance of giving back. These are some organizations I support: Beautiful Lengths, UNICEF, ACLU, SFAFNPR. I'm also working to establish a journalism scholarship in the name of my high school best friend Valentine Leborgne

    The Arts

I am a lifelong advocate for the arts. Pursuing my artistic endeavors has helped me to cultivate my creativity and channel it into almost everything I do. I love to experiment with mixed media and filmmaking in my spare time.

  • THESE ARE MY TALENTS

Everyone has got a knack for something.

    Writing

I'm the founder of Cal Poly's Technology Review and also contribute to Mustang News as their first tech reporter. I'm an expert at taking overwhelming technical, scientific, and data-heavy information and write simple, clear, and accurate stories. I also have experience handling external communications and content strategy.

    Project Management

I have spearheaded a $30,000 initiative for CSU libraries, managed a project for the CACC (working with over 6,500 cadets), and most recently, I've been spending my time leading a quantitative and qualitative study and intervention manual to increase access to PrEP in multiple counties.

    Public Relations

I've received extensive public relations training through Cal Poly, learning the best practices for public relations experts today. I am also skilled at crisis management, community relations, and health care communication. I've had hands-on training as PR associate for various startups and account executive for a PR firm

    Digital Media

I have advanced digital editing capabilities and I am comfortable using almost every tool and software out there. My expertise in digital media comes from my background as a journalist and marketing associate. I've done everything from creating websites and marketing collateral to producing short documentaries and audio stories.
